Ash Walsh wins in Perth and takes overall Dunlop Series lead.

The 2014 Dunlop Series had a change of outright leader in Perth today after Ash Walsh took the round win and moved to the top of Championship. The second 38 lap race saw the Infants’ Friend Falcon driver move from his 9th grid position to a very strong second place at the flag. The pair of second places for the weekend was enough to give Walsh the round win and the Dunlop Series Championship lead.

Although a hard fought race, two of Walsh’s main contenders suffered problems – one on track and one off it. Cam Waters was sitting one place ahead of a fast closing Walsh when he pulled his FPR Falcon off track with engine problems. Paul Dumbrell however had returned to Melbourne with some prior business commitments, a fact that was unknown to most of the field until an hour or so before the race.

Walsh told the media after the race that on one hand he was glad to be leading but wanted the on track results to be the gauge. He did however drive a well calculated race moving up once again in the reverse Top 10 race as he has done in previous rounds. A great battle with Dean Fiore was decided in Walsh’s favour as he was able to dive under him at Turn 7 as Fiore ran a bit wide. This gave Ash second place and a certain round victory.

The Infants’ Friend / AUSblue crew were jubilant at the round win and feels the momentum will continue to the next round in Townsville in early July.

“I did not find out that PD (Paul Dumbrell) was not running and had prior business commitments. I was as surprised as everyone else. It is not the way I wanted to take the Dunlop Series lead as we have had some really good battles on track and that is what you want to win. It has given me the points lead so I’ll take it.

“As far as today’s race goes, it was a good battle with Dean (Fiore) and I was able to get by him in Turn 7. The tyre degradation was much worse today than yesterday so to come through from 9th to 2nd was fantastic. We have some good form now, but there are still things all the team need to work on. The Championship has a long way to go but we are heading in the right direction.”

Ash Walsh piles on the points with fighting second place in Perth Dunlop Series race.

Leading Dunlop Series contender Ash Walsh delivered a stunning Qualifying run to put the Infants’ Friend Falcon on Pole Position for Round 3 of the Dunlop Series in Perth. What made the feat more impressive was that the Matt Stone Racing crew completed a full engine change with just five minutes to spare before the cars were sent to the track. A terminal problem had developed in the morning engine warm up and the crew were left with no alternative but to effect the change.

The 36 lap race got off to an even start, but Walsh had just a little too much wheel spin and lost the advantage into Turn 1. Series rivals Paul Dumbrell led and Cam Waters settled in behind Ash. Over the next few laps, Walsh tried hard to get past Dumbrell but could not make the move stick. Waters in fact displaced Walsh on Lap 6, but he regained his second place a few laps later as Waters was forced to serve a pit lane penalty.

The gap at the front was static until the later stages when Walsh mounted another attack on Dumbrell, but the handling and balance of the car simply did not allow Ash to make the move. The field crossed the line behind the Safety Car with Ash holding a solid second place.

The final race will see a reverse Top 10 grid with Ash starting out of P9.

“It was an interesting day! The Matt Stone Racing guys did a fantastic job to get the engine changed just before Qualifying. It was touch and go – I think we made it with five minutes to spare. So it was great to have a smooth run and grab that pole position.

“The race was a little frustrating with a few little things not quite right at the start. I tried to get by Dumbrell a number of times early on but I just could not get it done. Then we were running in with backmarkers as the race progressed so I just had to ensure we protected the second place.

“We know what to do for tomorrow, so it will be interesting to see if we can claw our way up the Top 10 as the race progresses and chase that podium position again.”

Ash Walsh continues fine form, topping the time sheets in Perth Dunlop Series practice.

Infants’ Friend V8 Supercar driver Ash Walsh has returned to one of his favourite tacks and delivered a strong message to the 26 car filed with fastest time in practice today at Barbagallo Raceway, Perth. The final order was again dominated by all the Dunlop Series fancied runners with Walsh heading Cam Waters, Garry Jacobson, Paul Dumbrell and Matt Stone Racing teammate Todd Hazelwood. Just 6/10ths of a second covered the first ten cars.

Walsh and his Infants’ Friend / MSR crew have worked hard on the set up of the ex Stone Bros Falcon and are now seeing very consistent performances at every track visited so far this year. The first 40 minute session finished with the two series leaders, Dumbrell and Walsh separated by just 4/100ths of a second. Ash turned the tables in the final practice run to ensure he recorded the fastest time of the day.

Perth’s Barbagallo Raceway has been a happy hunting ground for Walsh with his first front row Qualifying in 2012 and first round win in 2013. He is looking to repeat that this weekend and in turn bank good points in the Dunlop Series Championship hunt.

“We made some changes between P1 and P2 to tune the car up for the green tyre. We missed the boat a bit on the first run but a few tweaks and the second run was much better. I think we know what direction we need to go for Qualifying.

“I have always liked this track. I just seem to click with it and when the car is good we do go well. The Infants’ Friend Falcon was great here last year and coming into this weekend the car has been quite good right from the start. I am looking forward to Qualifying now.”

Walsh heads into Round 3 in second place overall in the 2014 Dunlop Series Championship.
