Ash Walsh recovers in dominant race win at Townsville Dunlop Series final.

After a frustrating end to the first Dunlop Series race on Saturday, Ash Walsh put his stamp on today’s race with a faultless performance to win the 29 lap final leg.

The race win was a critical part of Walsh’s title chase as it ensured he leaves Townsville with the points lead still in his pocket. Walsh made another great start and rounded up pole sitter Cam Waters by Turn 2. From that point he was never headed and managed a gap that Waters could not close. A Safety Car intervention did not deter Walsh as he blasted the Infants’ Friend Falcon back into the lead at the green flag.

As the laps ran down, Walsh started to catch back markers but got by to take the Chequered Flag and recover to fifth overall for the round. The pointscore has closed at the top of the leader board but Ash holds a 47 point lead in the 2014 Dunlop Series.

“I was really determined to come out today and get the race win after yesterday’s result. The race hinged on the start and I was able to get Cam (Waters) by Turn 2. From there it was all about building the gap and focusing on the lap times and tyre wear. The restart went well and I was confident that we could hold the gap to second.

“It was important not to not get carried away with what happened yesterday, so I just chilled out with the Matt Stone guys and looked at our plan of attack for today. I am always thinking of the championship so today was really important to ensure we kept the points lead. We have some new sponsors on board this weekend so I hope we gave them something to cheer about!”

Last corner carve up denies Ash Walsh a race win in Townsville Dunlop Series opener.

Infants’ Friend / AUSblue V8 Supercar driver Ash Walsh dominated Race 1 of Round 4 of the 2014 Dunlop Series today in Townsville. After Qualifying in second place the Ipswich driver grabbed the lead at the start and held it through a wild race littered with accidents and Safety Cars. But the Chequered Flag would not fly for the #87 Matt Stone Racing Ford as one of his main rivals made a poorly judged attempt to grab the lead at the last corner of the last lap.

Coming from a long way back Cam Waters totally overcooked his manoeuvre to try and pass Ash and hit Walsh’s car, turning it around only a few hundred meters from the flag. Walsh recovered as the field streamed by to finish in P18.

Walsh has remained in the Dunlop Series Championship lead although Paul Dumbrell made ground to be only 17 points in front.

Race 2 will be run over 29 laps on Sunday with a separate Qualifying session, which gives Walsh and the Infants’ Friend team every chance of victory.

“It was a good race right up until the very last corner. The car was very strong on the restarts. I was being a little cautious on the last lap and managing the lead. It allowed Cam to be in ‘punting’ distance and he took full advantage of it!

“I had a little rear locking in to Turn 2 but was confident I could keep the gap all the way to the flag. We have another Qualifying tomorrow for Race 2 so hopefully we can bounce back and win.”
