Tough Dunlop Series farewell for Ash Walsh in season finale.

Infants’ Friend V8 Supercar driver Ash Walsh completed his last round in the Dunlop Series happy with his overall performance in 2014, but ruing what should have been at Sydney Olympic Park. The Matt Stone Racing Falcon seemed to be the third best car in every practice and Qualifying session but Walsh was gunning to hold his second place in the 2014 Championship.

Race 1 saw a messy start with Walsh jumping then bogging down relegating him to 15th place on Lap 1. The Ipswich driver fought back well getting as high as 9th until a duel with Ant Pedersen into Turn 8 was ruled out of order by the stewards and Ash had to serve a Pit Lane Penalty drive through.

Resuming in 19th position he again began carving his way through the field but with laps running out he could only recover to finish in P12.

Sunday’s race would see a new Qualifying and a P4 start, but the results seemed to mirror the race of Saturday. Walsh was battling with Taz Douglas for fifth spot when he dived down the inside of the #10 Falcon. The two collided and once again the stewards deemed Walsh at fault. Another PLP was the outcome and a drop back to 19th position. The race was shortened from its scheduled 23 laps to 19 and once again Walsh ran out of laps to recover, finishing his last Dunlop Series race in P11.

It was not the way Ash had intended to leave the series but, as he moves on to the main Championship Series in 2015 with Erebus Motorsport V8 he was quick to thank the many sponsors and the Matt Stone Crew who had helped deliver so much success over the last three seasons.

#87 – Ash Walsh – Infants’ Friend FG Falcon

“We just could not take a trick this weekend. I am disappointed for the Matt Stone guys who have worked so hard this year. We got caught out a bit in practice, but the car was not quite as good around this track as I had hoped. We were quick for sure but had to hustle to make ground and just lucked out with a drive through in both races.

“It meant we were really behind the eight ball as passing is so hard here. The Infants’ Friend Falcon was moving up well but it was tough to recover form so far back. To drop a spot in the Championship was tough and not the outcome we came here for.

“I really have to thank Infants’ Friend, AUSblue and all the sponsors who came on board. And of course Matt Stone and the guys. We have had a great few years, now I look forward to the next challenge in the main game.”

Ash Walsh to start final Dunlop Series round in 3rd place.

AW.sydney.06.12.14

The 2014 Dunlop Series is all but over, but for Ash Walsh, it is a chance to leave the series with a race and round wins. Practice was completed on Friday and Walsh placed the Infants’ Friend Falcon in a strong 3rd place and backed it up with the same result in qualifying.

With the Championship in the hands of Paul Dumbrell, Walsh is determined to ensure he holds onto second in the highly competitive series.

Speaking about his Dunlop Series experience, Walsh said “I don’t think we could get much more out of it and 3rd was about the best we could do. I went a bit too far on the set up on Friday and although I thought we had gone the right way for Qualifying, we still ended up third. It is a good position to start from and I’m sure we can challenge the lead guys.”

‘I have a lot to thank all the Matt Stone racing guys for. They have done a huge amount for me and I will be really sorry to leave them. But the chance to step up to the main series is a fantastic outcome.”
