The Infants’ Friend / Bob Jane T-Marts Porsche GT 3 of Ash Walsh was in action in four races at the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix event held at Melbourne’s Albert Park. A good practice session led straight to Qualifying on Day 1 of the four day race meeting and Walsh ended up with a second row starting position in grid position three.
A first lap altercation with Alex Davison and in turn Steve Richards was a dramatic end for Ash as he did not complete a lap of Race 1 and would face an uphill battle in the remaining three tracs run under a progressive grid system. Stewards deemed it a ‘racing incident’ but Walsh was left by far the worst off.
Race 2 on Friday was held in greasy conditions as the rains came to Albert Park. Only nine of the scheduled twelve laps were run but Walsh pushed hard in the Infants’ Friend GT3 passing half the field to end up in P10.
Saturday’s race saw Ash make even more progress to finish in sixth spot paving the way for a good fight on Sunday. Under clear skies, the final race saw Walsh claw his way back to the lead trio, but try as he might he could not get past team mate Nick McBride and settled for a solid fourth place. From effectively last on Thursday, Walsh banked more points for the 2016 Championship and now sits in seventh place.
“I was confident after qualifying that we were in with a good chance with the Infant’s Friend Porsche. But Race 1 was a disaster and really put me on the back foot. We did extract some good speed for the car in the later races and it was good to be able to move up behind Nick in the final. I think that just showed me that we could have been challenging in every race.
The Sonic guys again gave me a great car and to run the Infants’ Friend / Bob Jane T-Marts backed Porsche in froth of huge crowd at such a great track is a highlight of the year. We now have a break until the end of April when we head to Sydney so we will be working hard on the car to give us the best shot at the podium.” Walsh said as the AGP event concluded.
