Ash Walsh has moved the Infants’ Friend / Bob Jane T-Marts Porsche GT3 into fourth position overall after a strong showing in the Rennsport Porsche Festival at Sydney Motorsport Park. The third round of the 2016 Carrera Cup Championship featured the Pro – Am combination with Ash teaming up with sports car regular Max Twigg.
Friday practice saw Walsh send a message to the field after topping the time sheets in Practice 1, but some minor hiccups in the co-driver session resulted in a fourth position on the day heading into Qualifying.
Saturday Qualifying was split for each driver and Walsh continued his good form by Qualifying sixth after Twigg had placed eighteenth in his session.
Twigg would start the first of two hour long races. He was able to move up a couple of spots before handing over to Ash on Lap 16 of the 34 lap journey. Walsh was on the charge as soon as he got in the car, moving up steadily to cross the line in eighth position.
Race 2 on Sunday saw the Sonic Team reverse the driver strategy and have Walsh start the car. He was up to third position on the first lap and moved into second place just one lap later. The Infants’ Friend pilot was in for his Pit Stop on Lap 22, running longer than many other teams. Max Twigg was now in the car for the run home and looked to be holding his own in second until a late Safety Car period was called after a clash between two cars saw one Porsche stranded against the inside wall at Turn 4.
Bunching the field proved a disaster for the Infants’ Friend Porsche as many of the Pro Drivers had taken the second stint and the order shuffled greatly in the final two laps.
Max Twigg sat second at the restart thanks to strong early drive from Ash Walsh, but fell to fifth by the flag. Overall, however it was good consolidation of points for Walsh in his 2016 championship campaign.
“The strategy worked really well for us in the second race, but we got rolled by a late Safety Car. The first stint was good and I felt we really had a podium chance. Max was holding his own in second but the final laps saw the field bearing down on him but he still got across the line in fifth.” Ash Walsh said.
“This format over the weekend was a great concept and really tested teams and drivers as it added pit stops and driver changes into the mix. The Infants’ Friend Porsche ran very well all weekend and to move up to fourth in the point’s sets us up well for the next round.”
