Darwin proved to be a round of highs and lows for Infants’ Friend Porsche driver Ash Walsh. Heading into Round 4 of the 2016 Porsche Carrera Cup Championship, Walsh was confident that the Sonic Team would be a real threat at the Hidden Valley track. Practice and Qualifying proved that the #777 Porsche was indeed on the pace with Ash lining up on the front row in position two.
Race 1 saw Walsh start well but a big lunge at Pole Sitter Matt Campbell for the lead at Turn 5 saw the Infants’ Friend / Bob Jane T Marts Porsche off in the grass and tumbling back to 12th position.
A good comeback drive by Ash moved him up the field to finish seventh just behind his team mate Nick McBride in the second Sonic Porsche GT3.
Race 2 was a tougher affair for Walsh. Battling hard with McBride into Turn 5, he was then turned around by Fraser Ross who hit the rear of the Infant’s Friend Porsche. Once again, Walsh had to cut through the pack to recover his position moving up from 19th to 9th at the flag.
The final race was less dramatic and Walsh took advantage of a Safety Car restart on Lap 4 to move up to 6th place. He would gain another spot to move into 5th on Lap 10 and hold that position for the duration of the race.
A determined recovery in the first two races gave Walsh an overall seventh for the round. He is now in 6th place in the 2016 Porsche Carrera Cup Championship.
Ash Walsh Quote: “The Infants’ Friend / Bob Jane T Marts Porsche had plenty of speed this weekend but we just did not put it all tighter. Qualifying was good, but I made a mistake in Race 1 which really hurt us.
“I was confident that we could move back up but then got hit by Ross in Race 2 and ended up at the back. So to finish up in fifth in the final was OK, but certainly not the result we were looking for. The racing was pretty wild in Darwin and once again the Sonic crew gave me a great car. We have to work on putting a full round result together in Sydney next month.”
