simPRO V8 Supercar driver Ash Walsh has continued his stellar run in the 2012 Dunlop Series by coming home in 5th place in the opening 14 lap race. This result adds to the other three Top 5’s to date out of the 6 races run so far in 2012.
Qualifying found the Matt Stone Racing Team making significant changes between runs in the 30 minute session. Walsh was confident that the changes to the set up were heading in the right direction however with good sector times on various laps; his best single lap time saw him finish in position 9.
The 14 lap race started in unusually cool and cloudy conditions and after a lot of jostling, Walsh crossed the line to complete Lap 1 in 6th place having grabbed three spots. The lead group stated to bunch up with a long train of cars headed by Youlden in second right back to Blanchard in 8th running nose to tail. Walsh was right in this battle and as cars lost tyre grip, the simPRO #87 Falcon made a great move to follow Scott Pye past Youlden and into 5th place on Lap 11.
‘It was a good to get another solid result after a pretty tough qualifying. I knew we had a decent car it was just getting the opportunity to show it off!” Ash commented. “I am really happy to get a P5 and pass some of the top guys on the way. It is good for the overall Dunlop Series points. We’ll see after the reverse grid tomorrow where we end up and give it a real crack.” Walsh concluded.
Round 3 of the 2012 Dunlop Series will conclude tomorrow with two races.
