Ash Walsh endures a tough Townsville Dunlop Series Round

SimPRO V8 Supercar driver Ash Walsh felt the highs and lows of competition at Round 3 of the 2012 Dunlop Series in Townsville on Sunday. After a strong performance in the opening race, the field lined up for race two with the top 10 finishers flipped into a reverse grid. Again there was action from the green light with frontrunners Pye, Blanchard and Mostert all getting involved in incidents on Lap 1. This left Walsh in position 6 and he was soon up a spot only to be passed by a very fast Scott McLaughlin. On Lap 12 Ash got past David Russell to come home in fifth place and score an up-front grid spot for the all-important final 18 lap race.

With all of the top drivers at the head of the field once again, there was the usual fireworks on Lap 1 with Walsh establishing himself in third place and on target for the podium. The simPRO Falcon driver was being hounded by Chaz Mostert in the factory FPR car and made one mistake on Lap 4 which was to prove very costly.

Heading down the fast chute into Turn 11, Walsh went on the defensive and locked the rear spinning the MSR Falcon and clouting the wall. With rear end damage and a popped windscreen the day was over for a very disappointed Walsh.

“The day started well in the reverse grid race. We ran the same tyres from Saturday to ensure we had the best for the final. I was very comfortable with the race pace and knew our sim PRO Falcon would be strong in the race. With Chaz behind me and on a charge, I just went too defensive. The car unhinged itself in the rear then bang. A very costly mistake.” Walsh said “We had a very good race car and the Matt Stone Racing boys did an awesome job.” Ash added.

Walsh finished in 12th place overall for the round and now sits in 6th place in the 2012 Dunlop Series.

Round 4 will be held at Queensland Raceway on August 3 – 5
