Infants’ Friend backed V8 Supercar driver Ash Walsh is aiming to repeat his fine performance in last year’s Sandown 500 this weekend as the Endurance Series kicks off. The Sandown 500 has a very rich history and is always seen as not only a guide to the Bathurst 1000 but a very good insight into the driver pairings that will race for the first time together in 2015.
Following the Sydney V8 Supercars Championship round, Walsh and the Erebus crew have been working hard to prepare the #4 Infants’ Friend / AUSblue AMG E63 for the 500 km enduro. Walsh’s co driver Jack LeBrocq will make his debut in the Championship after another solid practice session at the Sydney Motorsport Park round just three weeks ago.
Walsh has good memories of the Sandown 500 taking a splendid 5th place overall in the 2014 race with good mate Scott Pye in the DJR Falcon. But this year Walsh is the lead driver and will carry the responsibility of setting the car up for the race and the key qualifying run on Saturday.
In a unique format, both drivers will run their own race in the split Qualifying Sprints to determine the starting grid for Sunday’s 161 lap race. This will be Ash’s third appearance at the Sandown 500 after two years as co-driver to Tim Blanchard and Scott Pye with DJR.
ASH WALSH – #4 INFANTS’ FRIEND AMG E63
“I am really looking forward to getting back to Sandown for the 500. Last year I did a really long first stint (79 laps) as the co drivers all started the race. I think I was 10th when I handed over to Scott and it was great then watching him get the car up to P5 at the finish.
“I thought Sandown was a bit of a bogey track for me as my first 500 ended in a pretty big crash. But bouncing back last year to a 5th position was a great result. I really like the track. It is a difficult track to set up for. It has got a little bit of everything. Track surface changes, big kerbs, fast and slow corners and it is bumpy. I really enjoy racing there.
“We head to Sandown this year with an improved package with the AMG E63. Jack will have his first start in the main game so we will be out to post a solid result. Jack and I are both left foot ‘breakers’ so I feel it puts us in good stead to get the most out of the car. We raced really well for a long period at the front of the field at SMP last round and it was good for my confidence to be able to hold my own at the pointy end of the field. Sandown should be a really good lead up to Bathurst for us and the whole team.”
