Ash Walsh has made a storming debut in the 2016 Porsche Carrera Cup Championship with Pole Position and a race win on debut in the category. After joining Sonic, the 2015 Championship winning team, Walsh was confident going into the Clipsal 500 of a good showing, and was very happy with the overall performance after Round 1 concluded.

A strong run in Qualifying saw the Infant’s Friend Porsche on Pole Position for Race 1, ahead of one of the season’s favourites, young Queenslander Matt Campbell. Walsh bogged down at the start but recovered to third place in a shortened race due to accidents around the Adelaide Parklands circuit.

Race 2, and the Infants’ Friend Porsche GT 3 pilot was making his presence felt with a great move to take first place on lap 9, and hold it right through to the Chequered Flag in a dominant display. He came home nearly 3.5 seconds ahead of Bob Jane T-Marts teammate Nick McBride, making it a one – two for Team Sonic.

Race 3 was held on Sunday but was over for Ash at the first corner when he had the rear of the car step out over the tricky kerbs at the Senna Chicane and backed the car into the fence. Despite the DNF in Race 3, Walsh sent notice that he is a contender for the Carrera Cup Championship as the field heads to the next round the at the Australian F1 Grand Prix in 10 days’ time.

“It was awesome to get the win in my first outing in the Infants’ Friend Porsche. I still need to work on those starts as the first two races were a little tough to get going. The car was really good over the race distance in the second race and it really allowed me to put my head down and make a gap to Nick (team mate Nick McBride) once I got past him. He didn’t make it easy but I got a good run on him through Turn 1 and was able to get him at Turn 4.

“I was very comfortable in the car from the first time we hit the track on Thursday, so to score Pole Position for my first round was very satisfying. Obviously the third race was the only black mark on the weekend, but to get good results in Round 1 in such a competitive field sets us up well for the season. The Sonic Team have given me a great car and crew to work with.”
