Infant’s Friend driver Ash Walsh has taken his first V8 Supercars round win with victory in Round 2 of the 2013 Dunlop Series today at Barbagallo Raceway. He backed up his Saturday win with a hard fought 5th place in Race 2 and a sensible 2nd place in the final 20 lapper.
Race 2 was the Top 10 reverse grid race seeing Ash start from P10 after his win in Race 1. The MSR team had debated the tyre situation as Ash had his bank depleted somewhat to his rivals after flat spotting two in Qualifying. Armed with the same set as Race 1, the Infants Friend driver proved the competitiveness of the MSR Falcon as he charged from 10th to finish in a fine 5th place and cement his position for pole in the final race. He once again set the fastest lap of the race. In doing so he extended his lead in the Championship to 28 points prior to the final race.
Starting from Pole Position, Walsh had his work cut out as his main rivals in Dale Wood and Taz Douglas all had far better tyres at their disposal. Undeterred he launched the Infants Friend Falcon straight into the lead and opened up a round winning gap as those behind him battled for position. Only in the final few laps did he succumb to the Falcon of Wood, giving him plenty of racing room at Turn 6. There was little point battling with Wood as second place in the final secured Walsh the round win and cemented his position as outright leader in the 2013 Dunlop Series after two of seven rounds.
#87 – Ash Walsh – Infants Friend FG Falcon
“We had a rethink after Adelaide and it has really paid off. The MSR guys have done a fantastic job on the Infants Friend Falcon and it paid dividends today. I am really happy to get my first round win and be in the title hunt. We were in a major tyre battle over the weekend so to put the three races together to get this result is very satisfying. The guys have worked really hard so it is good to reward them. It is a long way to go but I think we are really in contention now for the Dunlop Series Championship.”
Round 3 of the Championship takes place in Townsville in early July.
