This weekend, the Infants’ Friend / Bob Jane T-Marts Porsche GT 3 of Ash Walsh tales part in a very unique Porsche Festival at Sydney Motorsport Park. Round 3 of the 2016 Carrera Cup Championship headlines the event in a once a year format as part of the Rennsport Porsche gathering.

The event sees all Porsche Carrera Cup entrants adopt a Pro – Am structure where the pairings will complete in separate Qualifying ‘main and co-driver’ sessions and then face two one hour races with compulsory Pit Stops and driver change.

Strategy will play a big part in Walsh’s Sonic Teams tackling of the weekend as it is a full points scoring round for the main drivers. A mistake by a co-driver can be costly and effect the end of season points tally.

Walsh has chosen regular Porsche ‘Elite Category’ competitor Max Twigg as co-driver. Twigg has a long record in GT and Porsche racing in Australia and Asia and is currently co driving with Steve Richards in the new BMW M6 GT3 car.

“I am happy to have Max on board as my co driver. Selecting the right driver for this event is critical as many of the Amateur drivers who have chosen to compete are teamed up with some of the best V8 Supercars guys on the grid. Max knows the cars and the format well and I’m sure with the guidance of Michael (Ritter) and Mike (Henry) in the pits, the Infants’ Friend Porsche will be in with a good chance.

“This is a really interesting event. I have not driven in the Rennsport round before but it will give these GT3 Cup cars a real chance to stretch their legs over the longer race formats. I am really looking forward to it.” Ash Walsh said.

The format at Round 3 of the 2016 Porsche Carrera Cup Championship sees the Pro and Am drivers will face a qualifying session each ahead of two 60 minute races, featuring a compulsory driver change.

The Infants’ Friend / Bob Jane T-Marts Porsche GT 3 of Ash Walsh was in action in four races at the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix event held at Melbourne’s Albert Park. A good practice session led straight to Qualifying on Day 1 of the four day race meeting and Walsh ended up with a second row starting position in grid position three.

A first lap altercation with Alex Davison and in turn Steve Richards was a dramatic end for Ash as he did not complete a lap of Race 1 and would face an uphill battle in the remaining three tracs run under a progressive grid system. Stewards deemed it a ‘racing incident’ but Walsh was left by far the worst off.

Race 2 on Friday was held in greasy conditions as the rains came to Albert Park. Only nine of the scheduled twelve laps were run but Walsh pushed hard in the Infants’ Friend GT3 passing half the field to end up in P10.

Saturday’s race saw Ash make even more progress to finish in sixth spot paving the way for a good fight on Sunday. Under clear skies, the final race saw Walsh claw his way back to the lead trio, but try as he might he could not get past team mate Nick McBride and settled for a solid fourth place. From effectively last on Thursday, Walsh banked more points for the 2016 Championship and now sits in seventh place.

“I was confident after qualifying that we were in with a good chance with the Infant’s Friend Porsche. But Race 1 was a disaster and really put me on the back foot. We did extract some good speed for the car in the later races and it was good to be able to move up behind Nick in the final. I think that just showed me that we could have been challenging in every race.

The Sonic guys again gave me a great car and to run the Infants’ Friend / Bob Jane T-Marts backed Porsche in froth of huge crowd at such a great track is a highlight of the year. We now have a break until the end of April when we head to Sydney so we will be working hard on the car to give us the best shot at the podium.” Walsh said as the AGP event concluded.

Ash Walsh ready for return to Albert Park in Porsche Carrera Cup Championship.

Round 01 of the 2016 Porsche Carrera Cup

Following a strong debut for Ash Walsh in the 2016 Porsche Carrera Cup Championship at the Clipsal 500, the series returns to the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park this weekend. A fast turnaround for the Infants’ Friend / Bob Jane T-Marts #777 Porsche GT 3 Cup Car by the Melbourne based Sonic team has meant a very busy start to the season for Walsh.

A Pole Position and race win in his debut in the category has sent a clear signal of Walsh’s intentions this year and the team is looking to continue the form in the four races held as a major support to the Formula 1 Grand Prix.

The track is a fast flowing layout which will see the Infants’ Friend Porsche reach speeds of nearly 250km. With a race each day, the pressure will be on the Queensland based driver to score points to close the 48 point gap to Sonic Team mate Nick McBride who took out the Clipsal round.

“The Grand Prix is one of the best events on the calendar. I have driven the V8 Supercar at the track but I reckon the Infants’ Friend Porsche will be in its element here. The Albert Park track is fast and flowing with a number of passing opportunities. Obviously qualifying will be critical as will tyre management over the four days.” Said Ash as he prepared for the Grand Prix event.

“Our team performed really well at Clipsal and it has been the best gauge so far to know just how we match up against the competition. I am really looking forward to this one and rewarding the Sonic team with a good result.”

The Porsche Carrera Cup is on track Thursday through Sunday at this weekend’s Australian Grand Prix.

Ash Walsh kicks off Carrera Cup season with Pole Position and Race Win at Clipsal 500.

Captured at the Clipsal 500, Round 01 of the 2016 Porsche Carrera Cup at the Adelaide Street Circuit, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia, Saturday, March 05, 2016.

Ash Walsh has made a storming debut in the 2016 Porsche Carrera Cup Championship with Pole Position and a race win on debut in the category. After joining Sonic, the 2015 Championship winning team, Walsh was confident going into the Clipsal 500 of a good showing, and was very happy with the overall performance after Round 1 concluded.

A strong run in Qualifying saw the Infant’s Friend Porsche on Pole Position for Race 1, ahead of one of the season’s favourites, young Queenslander Matt Campbell. Walsh bogged down at the start but recovered to third place in a shortened race due to accidents around the Adelaide Parklands circuit.

Race 2, and the Infants’ Friend Porsche GT 3 pilot was making his presence felt with a great move to take first place on lap 9, and hold it right through to the Chequered Flag in a dominant display. He came home nearly 3.5 seconds ahead of Bob Jane T-Marts teammate Nick McBride, making it a one – two for Team Sonic.

Race 3 was held on Sunday but was over for Ash at the first corner when he had the rear of the car step out over the tricky kerbs at the Senna Chicane and backed the car into the fence. Despite the DNF in Race 3, Walsh sent notice that he is a contender for the Carrera Cup Championship as the field heads to the next round the at the Australian F1 Grand Prix in 10 days’ time.

Ash Walsh – # 777 Infants’ Friend / Bob Jane T-Marts Porsche GT3

“It was awesome to get the win in my first outing in the Infants’ Friend Porsche. I still need to work on those starts as the first two races were a little tough to get going. The car was really good over the race distance in the second race and it really allowed me to put my head down and make a gap to Nick (team mate Nick McBride) once I got past him. He didn’t make it easy but I got a good run on him through Turn 1 and was able to get him at Turn 4.

“I was very comfortable in the car from the first time we hit the track on Thursday, so to score Pole Position for my first round was very satisfying. Obviously the third race was the only black mark on the weekend, but to get good results in Round 1 in such a competitive field sets us up well for the season. The Sonic Team have given me a great car and crew to work with.”

Ash Walsh confirms full Porsche Carrera Cup program with Bob Jane T-Marts and Sonic.

Ash Walsh will return to full time competition in 2016 taking the prized seat in the #777 Sonic Motor Racing Services Porsche GT 3 Cup Car. He will drive the 2015 Championship winning car of Nick Foster in this season’s championship. With backing confirmed from Bob Jane T- Marts, Walsh also continues with long time sponsor Infants’ Friend.

After stepping up from the Dunlop Series to a full time drive in the 2015 V8 Supercars Championship, Walsh and his management undertook a review of all available options for 2016. The chance to team up with Michael Ritter and the very successful Sonic Team was a chance that was not to be passed up.

Ash Walsh commented on his move to Sonic, the Carrera Cup and his new partnership with Bob Jane T-Marts at the recent Winton test day.

“It has been a very good start to the year with the Bob Jane T-Marts Porsche. It does take some adjustment to the driving style, particularly from a V8 Supercar. It is probably closer to my days in open wheelers. There is definitely a transition period but the information and guidance Sonic have given me so far is second to none. The car is fantastic to drive.

“Our goal with the tests has been to get really comfortable with the car and learn the way the team operates. Hopefully we can hit the ground running at Round 1 at the Clipsal 500.

“The Carrera Cup is full of very talented guys with a great mix of young and regular Porsche drivers. You definitely can’t write anyone off, and the test days have given us some good measures on the field and where we need to push on.

“It is great to have Infants’ Friend back with me this year, and to have such an iconic brand as Bob Jane T-Marts as our naming right sponsor is awesome. It will be a big year for the Sonic Team and I hope I can deliver another Championship to Bob Jane T-Marts backing up Nick’s (Foster) win last year.” Walsh said

Bob Jane T-Marts CEO, Rodney Jane was also pleased to continue his long association with Sonic. “We have enjoyed some great years with the Porsche and DVS Championships with Michael, Maria and all the crew at the Sonic Team. In 2016 I am very happy to see Ash Walsh in the #777 Porsche. I raced against him in the DVS series and he is a very fast and committed young race driver. The Bob Jane T-Marts brand has enjoyed success in motor sport over many years and the Carrera Cup will once again be a showcase sponsorship for the company on a national basis.”
