Last corner carve up denies Ash Walsh a race win in Townsville Dunlop Series opener.

Infants’ Friend / AUSblue V8 Supercar driver Ash Walsh dominated Race 1 of Round 4 of the 2014 Dunlop Series today in Townsville. After Qualifying in second place the Ipswich driver grabbed the lead at the start and held it through a wild race littered with accidents and Safety Cars. But the Chequered Flag would not fly for the #87 Matt Stone Racing Ford as one of his main rivals made a poorly judged attempt to grab the lead at the last corner of the last lap.

Coming from a long way back Cam Waters totally overcooked his manoeuvre to try and pass Ash and hit Walsh’s car, turning it around only a few hundred meters from the flag. Walsh recovered as the field streamed by to finish in P18.

Walsh has remained in the Dunlop Series Championship lead although Paul Dumbrell made ground to be only 17 points in front.

Race 2 will be run over 29 laps on Sunday with a separate Qualifying session, which gives Walsh and the Infants’ Friend team every chance of victory.

“It was a good race right up until the very last corner. The car was very strong on the restarts. I was being a little cautious on the last lap and managing the lead. It allowed Cam to be in ‘punting’ distance and he took full advantage of it!

“I had a little rear locking in to Turn 2 but was confident I could keep the gap all the way to the flag. We have another Qualifying tomorrow for Race 2 so hopefully we can bounce back and win.”
