Podium position for Ash Walsh closes out a wild weekend at Queensland Raceway.

Infants’ Friend V8 Supercar driver Ash Walsh has staged a great recovery to finish second overall in Round 5 of the 2014 Dunlop Series at Ipswich today. After a gritty drive on Saturday which saw Walsh storm past 25 cars, he was again on the move at the start of today’s race.

Quickly moving into third from sixth on the grid, Walsh picked off Paul Morris and Marcus Zukanovic to grab the lead. He then built a good gap to the field but today the Safety Car did not play into his hands. Lurking behind the lead group and driving up the Top 10 was rival Paul Dumbrell. These two have become the main protagonists in the championship and Walsh could see ‘PD’ closing down his advantage. With only three laps to run Dumbrell, with the faster car, slipped under Ash at Turn 3 and claimed the race win. In doing so he also sneaked into the lead of the Dunlop Series – only four points separating the two drivers.

For Walsh, it was a great performance after the penalty served up yesterday. To come from last to fifth in race one, then grab second on the podium for the round was a very solid performance by Walsh and the Infants’ Friend / MSR team.

The penultimate round takes place at Bathurst in October.

#87 – Ash Walsh – Infant’s Friend Falcon FG

“After I got past Paul Morris, I was sort of hoping he would hold up PD a little! He was really fast today and I just didn’t really have an answer for him. The mistake yesterday was costly and Paul made me pay for it.

“We may have started today with the tyre pressures a bit high and I could not hold Paul out. The car wasn’t bad; we just did not have quite enough to hang on at the end. Bathurst is going to be tough with the longer 250km race, but we are right in this Championship with only a handful of points between the two of us.”
