Storming drive from Ash Walsh sets up thrilling battle in Dunlop Series.

The first of two races in Round 5 of the Dunlop Series produced controversy and on track action in truck loads! In form series leader Ash Walsh qualified the Infants’ Friend Falcon in P4 after not getting the second run quite to his liking but drama greeted the young Ipswich based driver on his return to pit lane. An infringement in the delivery of the car to the scales was enough to send the #87 Matt Stone Racing Ford to the rear of grid. A bitter blow given his main rival Paul Dumbrell would start from the front row.

The race started and Walsh was on the move passing nine cars on lap one. But there was carnage at the front as Cam Waters dived into Turn 4, hit Chris Pither and an innocent Steve Johnson arrived with nowhere to go. A number of cars were eliminated on the spot as the field formed behind the first of what would be three Safety Car periods.

These laps under Safety Car in fact helped Walsh as he was able to continue his march up the field picking off car after car in one of his best drives in season 2014. As the final two laps were run in a race shortened 24 lap race, Walsh moved into fifth place limiting the potential point score damage and retaining the lead of the Dunlop Series Championship from Dumbrell.

He will start from the third row of the grid in the final 29 lap race on Sunday.

#87 – Ash Walsh – Infant’s Friend Falcon FG

“There was a lot going on in that race! There were cars going everywhere out of Turn 5 on the first lap and I took to the grass, kept the car straight, didn’t hit anything and pushed on.

“It all happened again at the second restart and I had to pick off cars as I could. I don’t reckon we had the best handling car today, but tomorrow will give us another crack after getting up to P5 today. We have chased every race and we will take tomorrow exactly the same way and hopefully bring home a good round result.”
