simPRO Racing Team driver Ash Walsh put in a heady and mature drive in Race 2 of the 2012 Dunlop Series at Bathurst today. Starting in position 20, Walsh was confident of moving up the field but was not losing sight of the need to continue to build on his Championship Points position.
Walsh wasted no time however and was up 6 spots in a blistering first lap to cross the line in fourteenth place at the end of Lap 1. Ash’s progress continued until Lap 6 when the Safety Car was called. At the restart Walsh was in a huge battle with Emery, Zukanovic and Drew Russell. The simPRO falcon was in the Top 10 on Lap 8 but tyre wear and the car’s balance were taking their toll and he slipped back to eleventh at the Chequered Flag. It was good result and the points earned were enough to hold his sixth place in the 2012 Dunlop Series.
“It was always going to be a tough race from our starting position. We did move up well but I just did not have the speed to crack the Top 10 at the end.” Ash said. “I used up the tyres passing a lot of guys in the early laps but then had to sit where I was. You have to be quick in the right places here to get past cars and I was early on, but it takes the edge off the tyres so there was not a lot more I could do. I am happy that I completed today’s race at a decent speed and finishing both races in my first real Bathurst round.” Walsh concluded.
